Designer enters worldwide contest with Selena-inspired shoe – Caller Times

Selena fans everywhere remember that purple outfit Selena wore at San Antonio's Alamodome.
Celebrities Kim Kardashian and Demi Lovato dressed up like the Tejano Queen for Halloween last year. Actress America Ferrera sported a look-alike dress on a Halloween episode of NBC's “Supermarket.”

The iconic purple outfit has also inspired a designer Luis Pizana, a Corpus Christi native.

He's created a shoe design that symbolizes Selena's music and legacy. The design has a chance to be sold at Foot Locker stores worldwide.
In a YouTube video, Pizana says his design “La Flor” was influenced by the singer who grew up in his hometown.
“I felt this was a great opportunity to pay homage to the late superstar,” Pizana said.
In the video, he describes how Selena Quintanilla's outfit had two distinct looks with a removable jacket.
The shoe will be made of knit, synthetic leather and an elastic bootie.
Pizana said the bootie was made to resemble rose petals, influenced by the song “Como la flor.”

Pizana entered the 2018 Pensole World Sneaker Championship contest, which is sponsored by Foot Locker.
His design shows the shoe can be worn with or without a strap, just like Selena's dress. 
A pull tag on the tongue of the shoe will depict a microphone with the competition's logo in red, representing “the red lipstick left behind on the mic on Selena's last show,” he said.
The outsole, or bottom of the shoe, features a treble clef made of music notes that “carry the tune of the song Bidi bidi bom bom.” The treble clef then transitions into a heart beat.

“The bottom embodies heart and soul, the two key ingredients it takes in order to chase something that you're truly passionate about,” Pizana said.
Designers from all over the world enter the contest for a chance to win cash and prizes, including the crown of Pensole World Sneaker Champion. A limited quantity of the winner's design will be made and sold at select Foot Locker stores.
To enter, contest participants must make a YouTube video describing their design. Pizana made the first cut of 64 designs.

According to the competition's website, the contest is conducted online in a single elimination, all-or-nothing style tournament.
The competition was created in 2014 as the first global sneaker design tournament used to discover and develop next great sneaker designers.
“Our goal is to have a global representation of aspiring sneaker designers to showcase their talent and represent their country,” the website states.
Pizana entered the contest in 2017 with a design influenced by Mt. Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes in Hawaii.
